LA PLATA, Md. (July 19, 2007) - Pro Bobby Lane of Lakeland, Fla., caught a five-bass limit weighing 23 pounds, 3 ounces Thursday to capture the lead in the Stren Series Northern bass fishing tournament on the Potomac River. Lane had a two-day catch of 10 bass weighing 38-14. Second place pro Ryan Park of Mount Joy, Pa., managed to haul in a total of 10 bass weighing 36-3 during the first two days of competition.
"Today was an amazing day to fish," said Lane, who has won over $235,000 in career earnings with FLW Outdoors. "I caught a lot of fish today. The key to the Potomac River is to fish in and around grass. I think I have enough fish in the area I am fishing to keep me in this."
Rounding out the top five pros are Michael Hall of Annandale, Va. (10 bass, 34-6); Bruce Neal of Manheim, Pa. (10 bass, 33-15); and Barton Wines of Warrenton, Va. (10 bass, 12-3).
Lane earned $268 for the Big Bass award in the Pro Division thanks to a 7-pound bass.
Overall there were 684 bass weighing 1469 pounds, 15 ounces caught Thursday. The catch included 105 five-bass limits. Valeri Timofeev of E. Stroudsburg, Pa., leads the Co-angler Division in the chase for a top award of $35,000, including a 519VX Ranger if contingency guidelines are met. He caught five bass weighing 6-14 on Wednesday and five bass weighing 17-10 on Thursday for a total of 10 bass weighing 24-8.
Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Charlie Reed of Hayes, Va. (10 bass, 23-13); David Williams of Fredericksburg, Va. (10 bass, 23-5); Michael Baker of Laurel, Md. (10 bass, 22-4); and Teddy Bradley of Mishawaka, Ind. (10 bass, 21-8). Sharon Balon of Clewiston, Fla., earned $138 for the Snickers Big Bass award in the Co-angler Division thanks to a 6-pound, 9-ounce bass.
Overall there were 438 bass weighing 833 pounds, 11 ounces caught Thursday. The catch included 37 five-bass limits. The top 40 co-anglers from each Stren Series division will also advance to the championship, where they will fish for as much as $70,000. The highest-finishing co-angler from each division at the championship will then advance to the 2008 Forrest Wood Cup.
Anglers will take off at 6:30 each morning from Smallwood State Park located at 2750 Sweden Point Rd. in Marbury, Md. Friday's weigh-in will be held at the marina beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday's weigh-in will be held at the Wal-Mart store located at 40 Drury Drive in La Plata beginning at 4 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
Stren Series tournaments are four-day events consisting of two rounds. The entire field competes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. At the conclusion of Friday's weigh-in, the field is cut to the top 10 pros and co-anglers based on the heaviest three-day accumulated weights. These anglers continue competition Saturday, with the winners determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from all four days.
