GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. - Working the ledges of Kentucky Lake with just one lure, Sheri Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla., secured a 3 1/2-pound lead Thursday at the fourth bass fishing tournament of the 2007 season of the Women's Bassmaster Tour.
Glasgow, who this season scored her first WBT win, ended the first of three competition days on Kentucky Lake with 16 pounds, 10 ounces, in front of Mickie Wolfinbarger of Halfway, Mo., who placed second with 13 pounds, 2 ounces.
Winning the event would be confirmation of Glasgow's so-far super season. She's the leader in the Women's Bassmaster Tour Angler of the Year race. In the WBT's three events of 2007, she placed third, first and fifth. Her first-place finish was at the end of March on Lake Dardanelle.
Ninety-five other pros will attempt to slow Glasgow's roll Friday and Saturday. They're competing for the first prize of a Triton/Mercury rig valued at $50,000.
"I'm fishing ledges, it's no secret," said Glasgow, 40, a designer for a custom-cabinet business in Oklahoma when she's not competing. "On Kentucky this time of year, you fish the ledges. I'm using the same bait all day, and it's the same bait I used in practice."
Glasgow has competed on Kentucky Lake four or five times in her career.
"I feel confident here," she said. "I'm not a deep-water angler, but this is the only deeper lake I've been to that I like."
Glasgow said she started her day by hooking striped bass - "four big ones" - then left the area without a black bass bite. Later in the day, with five keepers in her livewell caught in other parts of Kentucky Lake, she decided to stop again at the striper spot. There she boated four largemouth bass, allowing her to cull to beef up the weight that put her in the lead.
Wolfinbarger also had a limit. A computer design technician with the Missouri Department of Transportation, Wolfinbarger appears confident of her chances on Kentucky Lake.
"I'm catching them off steep, chunk-rock banks and points," Wolfinbarger said. "I think it will take 35 to 37 pounds to win this. It depends on if the ledge fish start biting for more people. If the ledges turn on, it's anybody's game."
In third after Day 1 was Lucy Mize of Ben Lomond, Ark., with 12 pounds, 8 ounces. Fourth with 12 pounds, 5 ounces, was Karla Bullard of Del Rio, Texas, where she led the season's first event for two days, but failed to close. Fifth was one-time WBT winner Lisa Sternard of Clarksville, Tenn., with 12 pounds, 4 ounces.
For many WBT anglers, the Kentucky Lake tournament is do-or-die. Both pros and co-anglers are competing for points to earn a berth in the season-ending championship. Pros' points also count in the Toyota Angler of the Year race, which means a prize of a 2008 Toyota Tundra.
Glasgow could secure the AOY crown if she wins at Kentucky Lake. Georgia's Pam Martin-Wells, who won the 2006 championship, is close behind her in points, but didn't have a good day Thursday, finishing in 31st.
Leading the field of co-anglers Thursday was Robbie Hartline of Foristell, Mo., who weighed in 10 pounds, 5 ounces. On her heels with 10 pounds, 4 ounces, was BJ Carson of Inola, Okla. Tied for third at 8 pounds, 12 ounces, were Debbie Pegoli of Loveland, Ohio, and Carilyn Hill of Coweta, Okla. In fifth was Linda Keithley of Springfield, Mo, with 6 pounds, 6 ounces.
Fishing from the back of the pros' boats, co-anglers are competing against each other for a top prize of $1,000 in cash and a Triton/Mercury rig worth $25,000.
