Almost every lake has heavy cover. Now where do the big bass like to live? They like to live in that heavy cover and conventional casting techniques just can't get your bait in there and if you do get it in there, your odds of getting the fish out are pretty slim. And that's where flipping and pitching comes into play. Let me show you how to flip.

Number one, you gotta be working with the right piece of line. Hold your arm straight out and make sure that bait is about even with the reel and that way you can get a piece of line that's very comfortable to work with. Now you swing it out. Just get it to swing out and when you swing it out don't let go of the line or you're going to splash the lure into the cover. What you're trying to do is let this line slide through your hand just like that. You're letting it just slide over your hand, bringing this hand back to the reel. Now you let your line or you're letting your lure fall on a slack line. Just a little bit of slack in your line. That way your lure will fall straight down into the cover. When it hits bottom, shake it a couple of times. Now is the time to feel. If it feels heavy, if it feels light you need to set the hook but bring it out, put it in the next likely looking spot, let is fall straight to the bottom following it down with the rod, couple of shakes, bring it out, put her into the next place.

Why would we flip? Well if the water's dirty, you can get a lot closer to the fish or if the cover is real uniform and heavy, just think of how many more drops you can get into the fishes homes because you're not spending all that time reeling. You got a piece of line that you're working with, your reel's engaged, you're fishing close to the fish where you can feel the bites better, you get a better hook set and you've got a better chance of landing them. So flipping can have a real advantage in dirty water and heavy cover. You need to learn how to flip. It will make you a better big bass fisherman.
