The South Texas Team Trail held their final bass fishing event for the 2005 season on May 21st at Choke Canyon. The summertime conditions, with temperatures in the mid 90's made for a great day out on the lake for the 156 teams wrapping it up. Lots of big bass were caught, and several giant sacks were brought to the scales. Three sacks over 30 lbs came in, and it took over 20 lbs just to grab a check. Carrie and Henry Fojtik, husband and wife team, brought in the 1st place record breaking sack at 35.32 lbs.
Back in March, the Fojtiks came on strong at Choke, taking their brand new Skeeter Boat out on its maiden voyage, and bringing back the third place stringer. Sticking to their same fishing holes and tactics as their last visit on this lake, this time they took it to the top, winning 1st place. "We just went to the same place. A drop off at a hump that went about 15' deep" Carrie explained. We were throwing a Carolina rigged Kudzu lizard over the drop, and had our limit in the boat by about 10:00. We caught fish all day. It was great." Carrie also boated their kicker, a 9.54 lb sow and credits her husband for being a great net man. "Before the end of the day, we were culling 6 lb'rs. My husband said as he went to cull one of them 'I just don't know if I can throw him back!' Everyone was great at the weigh in, congratulating us and shaking our hands. This is a really great run tournament." They won the brand new Skeeter SX190 powered by a Yamaha150 Vmax valued at $30,400.
John Goin and Elroy Krueger brought in the 2nd place 31.00 lb sack, worth a check for $2,500. They Carolina rigged a red shad Power Worm and a Senko in and around flooded willow trees 25' deep. "The day started out just right. Our first limit was in the boat by 9:00. We caught around 25 keepers today. They were all chunks, the biggest went about 7 pounds. My hand is ripped up from it. We had a really great time" - John Goin.
Trent Huckaby and Bubba Haralson weighed in another all chunk bag at 30.70 lbs. They fished the grass edges, brush, bushes and trees in 12-15' with a 10" red shad power worm and a 3/4 oz. camo jig. They stayed on main lake points and caught most of their fish the very first hour. "We caught fish all day, probably 20 in all. It's a good day of fishing when you are culling five pounders" stated Trent. This team is also the 2005 Anglers of the Year for the South Texas Team Division, qualifying them for the International Challenge.
Justin Farris, fishing with partner Corbin Stock, reeled in the Big Bass of the event at 10.40 lbs, earning a $1,000 check. "We just got lucky" Justin began. I was throwing a 1/8 oz Texas rigged red shad worm in about 15' over the tops of grass beds. Today was really great. We were culling up to 4# bass. This is our first year in Bass Champs. We'll be back again next year!"
All teams who have entered in all five events qualify to fish the tour championship. The tour championship for the South Texas Team Division will be held Sunday, May 22nd on Choke Canyon.
The winners from each Team Division, plus the team who holds the honors for the biggest stringer of the year from all divisions, and the team who caught the biggest bass, plus the anglers of the year from each division will then advance to the International Challenge. These 10 teams will fish against Mexico's finest July 15th on Lake Guerrero.
Twenty teams, the top 10 from each Tour championship plus the top 10 in Angler of the Year standings from each division will advance to the State Championship October 7-8. Eighty teams will competing for four Skeeter SX 200's powered by Yamaha 200 motors in each division while being Nationally televised. Each of the championships, are Free Entry Fee events with an optional 100% side pot. The lake that this is to take place is yet to be announced, so stay tuned to www.basschamps.com for more details.

How you get there?
- If you fish all 5 regular season events in your region you will automatically qualify for your regions TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP.
- The TOUR CHAMPIONSHIPS will be held for each region on the Sunday (day after the last regular season event), on the same lake as the last event, and will feature a Free Entry Fee, a Skeeter SX 190/ Yamaha 150 for 1st Place, and a 100% cash sidepot.
Then What?
The State Championship will feature 80 teams.
- The Top 10 point leaders in each region & The Top 10 finishers at each Tour Championship
- The State Championship will be a Free Entry Fee event with optional 100% side-pot
- 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and 4th Place will all receive a Skeeter SX 200/ Yamaha 200.
- The State Championship will be held October 7th & 8th.
- The lake for this event will be announced at a later date.
- Hotel rooms will be reserved in advance for each qualifying team.
