Skeeter Bass Champs anglers are setting bass fishing tournament records at every event so far this season. The East Texas team circuit just set the all time Bass Champs record for number of entries into a single event with 337 teams signed up to fish Sam Rayburn January 28th. The South Texas team trail set a new all time stringer weight record with 39.66 lbs last week. It was predicted that it would take 28-30 lbs to win this tournament, and the estimate was right on. Randy Turner and Jerry McMullen won the event with 28.22 lbs. Bass Champs paid 46 places with $89,000 in cash & prizes and as always there was a lot of fun for everyone with lots of money being won for the anglers and trivia games, drawings & prizes for everyone.
Pending thunderstorm predictions did not slow down the almost 700 anglers that came to fish this tournament. There was a vast diversity of teams who came to fish, from long time tournament anglers to couples to father & son teams, anglers as young as 9 years old. While the rain held off until early afternoon, the wind posed a challenge all day making each of them work hard to hold their spots, or dodging for cover in calmer coves.
Jerry McMullen and Randy Turner double fisted their bag as they brought it to the weigh in and then to the scales. We knew it was heavy, and when their weight was announced at 28.22 lbs, their fellow anglers gave them applause. They fished deep structure, stumps and creek channels in 22'-25'. They threw Texas rigged red shad worms and lizards all day. "We had a limit in the morning, but caught the ones we ended up weighing in between 11-11:30. We culled four 4 pounders," Randy continued. "We've been catching some good fish in that spot, but nothing like today. The timing was just right." Their kicker weighed in at 8.46 lbs. For Jerry McMullen and Randy Turner, it is the first Skeeter Boat Grand Prize win. "We're pumped! This is really great" Randy said. Their 1st place prize of a Skeeter SX200 rigged with a Yamaha 200 motor, Motorguide trolling motor and Lowrance electronics is valued over $32,000.
Skeeter Pro Staff Team members Randy Beck and Shane Hilton won 2nd place with their 24.56 lb stringer. They were of course fishing from a qualified Skeeter boat, and Chad Potts tournament director asked them if they knew what that meant at Bass Champs. Ray answered "Yes! It means more money!" Which is exactly right. They doubled their 2nd place $4,000 check to and $8,000 payday thanks to the Skeeter Bonus. "Our fish came off of Stanleys new Wedge spinnerbaits, Cyclone lures, V & M lizards and rattle traps. We were fishing an area that was out in the open, and with the wind blowing all day we couldn't hardly go anywhere so we stayed tight in the area we were fishing. The fish were sitting in 8'-10' along the outside grass edges" Shane reported.
The 3rd place team of Randy Patin and Scotty Reynolds are no strangers to the winners circle when it comes to bass fishing. "We struggled today. It was a tough bite for us. We fished one little area throwing chartreuse/gold rattle traps in 8'-10' water along the grass edges. We only caught 6 keepers all day" stated Scotty. Fishing a main lake point, they caught their 5th fish at 2:00. Finally, at 3:00 they caught a 7 pounder and culled one with it. They weighed in 23.30 lbs and won $3,000.
The $1,000 Big Bass prize was won by Jim Baldwin and Randy Krowe with thier 9.36 lb bass.
At every event, a non-profit organization brings a host of volunteers to help with the weigh in. The American Cancer Society brought their crew, and to help them in return, Bass Champs and their sponsors provided products to be raffled off. At this event, more than $1,400 in prizes were provided for the raffle that anyone can participate in, and Bass Champs matched the ticket money up to $500.
The next East Texas team event was scheduled to be on Toledo Bend. Due to the low water conditions, that has been moved to Sam Rayburn Feb 25th. For more information, call 817-439-3274.
