First place on Lake Tawakoni was won by Kenneth Hathcock and his step son Shawn Burris. As Kenneth reported, "We got on them early, and as I was netting a fish for Shawn, I felt a jerk on my line and we had a double hook-up" Hathcock recalled of the winning day of fishing that he and Burris had. The weather was excellent for the 275 teams fishing this second event for Skeeter Bass Champs North Texas 2005 Team Trail. Temperatures were mild with partly cloudy skies and winds out of the N/NE.
Hathcock and Burris went to an area of the lake that they were already familiar with, but didn't check out during practice. Fishing a black & red jig as well as Texas rigged watermelon red creature baits they boated their first limit of the day by 8:20. They concentrated their efforts along a brushy, grassy shoreline back in a pocket in 1'-4' depths. They shared their water, as the 3rd place team was fishing right near them. By 10:30 it was all over, but they had pulled in the best five fish limit of the day weighing 19.34 lbs. Their best bass weighed about 5 ½ pounds. This is their first boat win, and Bass Champs presented them with a brand new Skeeter SX200 / Yamaha 200 V-Max bass rig valued at $34,000.
Marcus Brister and Bill Brasher won 2nd place with 18.12 pounds, bringing home a check for $4,000. They reported catching all of there fish on shallow running chartreuse colored crankbaits around rocks.
Climbing up the ladder from the first event is another father and son team, Lee and Charles Yowell. In February, they finished in 5th place overall, but today they improved their standings bringing in the 18.08 lb limit that won 3rd place and $3,000. "We caught five twins. They all came off of a black & blue Texas rigged brush hog" Lee stated. "We flipped the grass in about 2' of water in a little 100 yard ditch about 30 feet wide. We fished one side of the ditch and the 1st place team fished the other. The difference was their 5 lb'r. We found this spot during practice, and it really produced for us. We put 17 keepers in the boat out of that spot." Lee and Charles also fish the East Texas Team circuit whenever they can and they are in the running for Anglers of the Year.
Bill Gammons and Terry Johnson made a game plan for the day and stuck to it all day. It was a tough bite for them, only catching three keepers and missing some others. It was getting late in the game, and they decided to make a move. When they got to their alternate spot, it was 3:00 and they didn't have much time left. 0n the 3rd cast Bill latched on to the big bass of the tournament, weighing 9.98 lbs. Terry stated "after Bill set the hook, it seemed like it took him 10 minutes to get her in. In reality it was probably only two or three minutes. He played her a little, and then when he got her to the boat, in the blink of an eye I got her in the net. Once we got her in the livewell, Bill had to sit down because he was shaking. That was our 4th fish. We threw 3-4 more casts in the same spot and got our 5th fish on. He spit the hook out at the boat, but that's just fishing. We're just two guys who love to fish, and we usually have good luck at this lake. I hope it keeps up."
Stan Lawing and Tim Wilcoxson doubled their 11th place $1,040 winnings to $2,080, plus, they received a $500 Bonus from Fun-N-Sun Boating Center for being the highest finishing team that purchased their Skeeter at one of Fun-N-Sun's 3 locations. With the Skeeter Bonus money, the Fun-N-Sun Bonus, and 11th Place Lawing and Wilcoxson earned a total of $2,580 for 11th place.
