WOODBRIDGE, Va. (Aug. 18, 2005) - Pro Tim Peek of Sharpsburg, Ga., caught a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 32 pounds to lead round one of the EverStart Series Northeast Division bass fishing tournament on the Potomac River near Woodbridge.
"I've had one area where I could go and get an early morning bite on the outgoing tide with a topwater," Peek said. "I caught a couple there this morning, and after that, I fished around grassbeds and docks with soft-plastic lures."
Peek caught his topwater bass on a Zoom Horny Toad and a Pop-R. Later in the day, while fishing the docks and grassbeds, he threw a weighted, green-pumpkin Zoom fluke to catch his bass. All but one of the fish in Thursday's five-bass limit were quality fish that broke the 3-pound mark.
Rounding out the top five pros are Mike Hicks of Mineral (10 bass, 29 pounds, 14 ounces); Bo Curry of Monrobia, Md. (10 bass, 27 pounds, 5 ounces); Peter Herbst of Arlington (10 bass, 27 pounds, 3 ounces); and Michael Hall of Annandale (10 bass, 26 pounds, 6 ounces).
Bill Terry of Vero Beach, Fla., caught a 5-pound, 10-ounce bass to earn the day's Snickers Big Bass award for the Pro Division, worth $550.
Doug Jenkins of St. Leonard, Md., caught a two-day total of eight bass weighing 21 pounds 4 ounces to lead the Co-angler Division. Jenkins, who also led on day one, fished with pro J.T. Kenney of Frostburg, Md., on Wednesday and caught his bass flipping with heavy tackle around grassbeds. On Thursday, he fished with Ron Wolfarth of Locust, N.C. "It was completely different today," Jenkins said. "I threw spinning tackle with 10-pound test. I wouldn't have thought about doing that yesterday." Jenkins caught Thursday's bass on a Yamamoto Senko.
Rounding out the top five co-anglers are David Borodziuk of Audubon Park, N.J. (nine bass, 19 pounds, 8 ounces); Larry Church of Keysville (seven bass, 19 pounds, 2 ounces); Mike McDonald of Randleman, N.C. (10 bass, 18 pounds, 15 ounces) and Derek Moyer of Alexandria (five bass, 17 pounds, 1 ounce).
Jonathan Ceaser of Midlothian earned $210 for catching the Snickers Big Bass in the Co-angler Division. The big bass weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces.
