Mar 13 & 14th found ArmyBassAngler Pros Brent Homan and Chuck Guthrie starting the day off in North Peach Creek. Both anglers were looking shallow for bedding bass and cruisers. The water was off-colored but with the aid of their Oakley Flak-Jackets coupled with the Tungsten Iridium lenses a few beds were noticed but only small males holding down the fort. So, the team decided to back off the banks and target the larger females. Homan began throwing a Phoenix Jig with a Lake Fork Trophy Lures 6" Hyper Worm trailer matched with the new ACU digital series 7 MH Castaway Rod paired with an Ardent 1000xs reel. Guthrie was utilizing a Lake Fork Hyper Stick weightless on a Castaway custom built rod paired with an Ardent 600xs reel. Guthrie caught a fish in the two pound range and tossed it back knowing that Lake Conroe would take something in the 5-6 pound range to get one of the five hourly checks. Homan was slow retrieving the Phoenix jig with about 6 feet of line out when the rod loaded up and Brent set the hook with a sweeping motion, the battle was on. After several minutes of fighting the big sow she was landed and weighed 10.04 lbs. This was Homan's second 10 lber in less than 2 weeks on LFT products.
While continuing on the quest for another Lake Conroe giant, Guthrie quickly changed over to a Phoenix jig and was slow retrieving it when his rod loaded up the battle was on, after a few seconds he realized that he had hook a 10 lber as well unfortunately is was a Gasper Goo!! Three casts later the same scenario this time Chuck was thinking surely this is not another Goo, then the tail tale sign of a rolling fish, it was not a Goo this time it was a 5 lber but again of the wrong species-a catfish! The team weighed in with the 10.04 during the 12:00-1:00 hour only to be beaten by an 11.32 pound bass-unbelievable. The team spent the rest of the day scouting the lake for the next day's event. The team struggled the following day with no keepers to bring to the scale. It was still an awesome event the team had a lot of fun and enjoyed the ride in there Yamaha Powered Skeeter while scouting for fish.
Day 2 of the event, the ArmyBassAngler Pro were joined by ArmyBassAnglers
Pro/President Cody Roberson and his special partner CJ Romero, Cody's son visiting on spring break. "I was very excited to have CJ be able to join me in the event. I didn't think I was going to be able to make the event due to some last minute medical issues. So I originally had cancelled, but fortunately my providers, Oakley and BBT were able to accommodate me and then more importantly allowed CJ to fish with me in the event. I can't thank them enough," stated Robeson.
Cody will be flying to George Town University on 22 March to undergo surgery as a Bone Marrow Donor for a 48 year old woman who has terminal cancer and requires a bone marrow transplant. Cody was the only perfect match in the bone marrow program repository. "I'm pretty excited about the opportunity to help someone, but at the moment I'm more pumped that me and CJ get the opportunity to fish this event-HOOAH!"
With that said, CJ and Cody would work the shallow coves most of the morning looking for cruising bass and females still staging. Based on the day's previous report that Homan had landed a 10.02 on a Phoenix Vibrating Jig with a LFT trailer, Roberson made sure CJ was all squared away.
At about 0900 it paid off, CJ landed a nice solid 2+ lber. The team continued to fish closely watching the weigh-in weights and headed to the scales hoping day 2 would produce smaller weights since most of the big fish had been taken the day prior. The decision wasn't a bad one. CJ's fish held up all the way till literally the last 10 minutes when 3 boats came in with 4 lbers to bump CJ out of 3rd, 4th, and finally the 5th place position. "I was really excited for him, I really didn't care if he won a check, I just wanted him to experience the fun and excitement of a tournament of this caliber," stated Roberson. "And that's exactly what happened."
Later that afternoon, Roberson would hook up with a solid 5 lber but as luck would have it, the fish managed to come unbuttoned when Cody went to sling it into the boat.
"Overall this was a high quality event and we couldn't have asked for a better host and sponsors to the event than Big Bass Tour, Oakley and Lake Fork Trophy Lures. Our ability to participate and share our Mission is only furthered by great events like this," said Roberson.
