MONROE, La. - Harold Allen endured an unsettled climate, fluctuating water levels and 200 other bass fishing anglers for his first win at the third and final Bassmaster Central Open Saturday on the Ouachita River. Allen, a Texas native held on to the top position after two days to win with a three-day weight of 38-pounds and 4-ounces.
"I started (fishing) back in 1977 and have won in every other circuit but BASS," said Allen. "It's been a long time coming."
Allen will take home the top prize of $15,000 cash and a fully rigged bass boat valued at $35,000. Patience was the key for the victory as Allen endured the shallow waters for all three days.
"I had to slow down. That was hardest thing," he said. "I had to slow myself down. There was never a fast bite today, but it was a quality bite. You had to have patience, patience, patience and slow down to catch them.
"I fished the Darbonne Bayou area. It was really a depression in a big flat. I was fishing about 3 or 4 feet deep, using a Brush Hog and a V & M, four-inch ringworm."
Allen's first win was necessary for him to have enough points to get into the inaugural Bassmaster Open Championship this December at Toledo Bend.
Allen, along with the rest of the Central Division's top 20 anglers will raise the tally of anglers to fish the inaugural Bassmaster Open Championship in Toledo Bend this December to 60 with the remaining 20 spots coming from the Western Division next week on Lake Havasu in Arizona.
Mark Tucker wound up in second, Saturday, with a three-day total weight of 33-4. The Missourian was happy with the victory, and grateful for the opportunity to compete.
"I'll take second behind Harold any day," Tucker said. "He's a good guy and I'm happy for him. I've been at it a long time too and would love to win, but he's been at it for longer than I have, so he deserves it more than I do.
"I did everything I could do today. I caught, probably 30 or 35 keepers and in the area I was fishing, I just didn't feel like I could catch a 15-pound bag. I caught so many fish today, I had a blast."
Tucker, who was fishing Team Supreme 3/8 ounce Brute Shad, walked away with a fully rigged boat as well as $5,000 cash.
Louisiana's Roger Boler, Texas's Takahiro Omori and, Okalahoma's Edwin Evers rounded out the top five of the tournament with weights of 31-12, 29-15 and 28- 15 respectively.
Evers also wrapped up the Bassmaster Central Open series on top of the point standings. His 5th place in the event gave him enough points to retain the lead in the division's overall standings. Evers will be joined by Tim Carroll from Oklahoma and Steve Sennikoff from Texas with berths to the Bassmaster Classic to be held next spring in Charlotte, N.C.
Dan Handy, from Arkansas, took the top honors on the non-boater side Saturday with a three-day weight of 20-1. Handy gave most of the credit to his pro's each day and was absolutely thrilled with the win.
"You can always learn," Handy said. "The key today was the spinnerbait. I fished it slow today and it paid off."
Handy walked away with a $24,000 payday in the form of a boat and motor.
Texas's John Hobson was second on the non-boater side with 16-2 and Tennessee native Keith Newsom rounded out the top three with 14-11.
