UMATILLA, Ore. - A slow start failed to deter John Gardner from taking over the lead on the second day of the BASS Federation Nation Western Divisional bass fishing tournament on the Columbia River.
The 48-year-old taxidermist from Durango, Colo., took over first place in the individual standings with 31 pounds. Gardner trailed Oregon's Kevin Gray on Wednesday, but his five-fish limit weighing 14-6 moved the Southwest Colorado Bassmasters club member into the top spot today.
"I went to my No. 1 hole this morning thinking I could catch a limit of small fish but I caught only two little fish," said Gardner, who is competing in his fourth Western Divisional. "So I was little bit devastated and had to move. All day long, I kept contemplating running but I went into another hole and fished around."
When the fishing was slow at his second stop, Gardner contemplated making another move, but decided to fish the spot for another five minutes.
"Then I caught a 3-pounder and I looked at my partner and told him we should just stay here and fight it out," said Gardner. He landed another 4-pounder five minutes later and spent the rest of the day fishing shallow in the same area.
Tomorrow's final round decides which anglers from each state advance to the 2007 BASS Federation Nation Championship. Teams from bass clubs of 10 states are competing in the three-day event, with the top finisher from each team qualifying for the Federation Nation Championship.
The team leaders after two days of competition include Gardner from Colorado; Gray, Oregon; J.D. Wood, Montana; Roger Mezenen, Utah; Ed Peterson, California; Curtis MacFee, Idaho; Mark Lester, Arizona; David Kromm, Washington; Scott Skinner, Wyoming; and Mark Adams, New Mexico. Idaho retained the lead in the state competition with a collective catch of 288 pounds, 8 ounces.
The competitors take off each day at 5:15 a.m. and return at 2:30 p.m. to weigh in their catches at the Umatilla Marina.
