ALEXANDER CITY, Ala., Nov. 21, 2002 - Coby Carden of Shelby, Ala. jumped to the early lead at the Alabama CITGO BASSMASTER Southern Open presented by Busch Beer on Lake Martin with a five fish limit weighing 17 pounds 5 ounces on Thursday.
"I hope I didn't use up all of my luck today," said Carden, who placed third on Lake Martin in December of 2000. "I lost three more big ones today which would have given me a total over 20 pounds. This lake has been good to me in the past, but never quite as good as it was today."
Carden has a 6 pound 11 ounce lead over second place Dave Smith. Smith, of Del City, Okla. caught 10-10 while Canton, Ga. angler Jimmy Millsaps, who won a CITGO BASSMASTER event on Lake Martin in 2000 is third with 9-12. Bartow, Ga.'s Danny Kirk and Cleveland, Tenn.'s Ralph Petty are tied for fourth with 8-13.
On the amateur side of the pro-am competition, John Vardaman of Anniston, Ala. shows the way with a total of 8-9. Larry Cahan of East Palatka, Fla. is second with 8-4 and Brad Morley of Woodstock, Ga. holds third with 8-3.
Anglers in the event are competing for a total purse of $320,000 with the top pro claiming $50,000 and the top amateur winning $24,000. Following Friday's round of competition the field of 200 pros and 200 amateurs will be reduced to just the top 50 competitors in each category.
Also up for grabs in this, the final tournament of the season in the southern division are valuable points toward qualifying for both the CITGO BASSMASTER Tour and the CITGO BASSMASTERS Classic which will take place August 1-3 in New Orleans. The top 15 pros in the season point standings will have the opportunity to compete on the CITGO BASSMASTER Tour, while the top five will earn berths to the Classic.
Anglers launch from Wind Creek State Park Marina at 6 a.m. The daily weigh-ins begin at 2 p.m. at the marina.
