JASPER, Texas - Kevin VamDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., took the Day 2 lead of the Bassmaster Elite Series' at Sam Rayburn Reservoir on Friday.
But that's most likely not what fans in attendance - or the angler himself - will remember.
What will stick will them? Maybe the image of the top-ranked Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index angler proudly reeling in a five-pound bass - right before the fish flipped into the boat, skimmed across the deck and plopped back out on the other side. A frustrated VanDam - captured on ESPN cameras - quickly fell onto his back. "It was the heat of the moment and I know better than to flip them in," he said. "It's hard to keep fish on the line. They are feisty and that's the nature of the post-spawn."
That near-catch - as well as other action on the water - will be featured on ESPN2's The Bassmasters on Saturday, March 25, at 10 a.m. ET.
VanDam still managed a limit of 17-5 for a two-day total of 39-6.
Directly behind him was Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu, Ariz., who leapfrogged from fourth place to second on Day 2 with a total of 39-3. While Rojas continued fishing both the main lake and creeks, the elusive angler, who is 19th on the Power Index and catches an average of 22-14 per tournament, would not say what he threw, what technique he used or where exactly he was. "I'm doing something different," he said, defining his work as both conservative as well as keeping with current weather conditions. Those conditions are expected to worsen Saturday, as the forecast calls for rain and wind.
In third place was former tournament leader Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., with 38-15. Hackney, who is fourth on the Power Index, said he lost two big keepers and was penalized for bringing in an expired fish. Still, he remained positive and high on the leaderbord. "My expectations are as high as they can get. I seemed to be the problem today, not the fish."
John Crews of Salem, Va., and Tim Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., were tied for fourth with 37-9. Horton, who said he caught his limit by 9 a.m., is one of the few anglers not sight-fishing. Rather, he's using an Excalibur XR50 rattle bait in the middle of the lake.
Friday was the end of the tournament for the majority of the field, as only the top 50 pros and co-anglers compete Saturday. They include:
Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., in 10th with 34-9. Reese missed last week's cut after he was penalized for coming in two minutes late, but he was sure to check his watch on Friday. "I was trying to be greedy last week because I was after a big bass, but I'm not going to make that error again."
Jason Quinn of Lake Wylie, S.C., who spent more than half his time on Friday fishing for one female bedding bass that struck three times but never made it into the boat. "My whole day was working a b-plan," he said. "Saturday, I am going back after two bass that I've already seen." Quinn was in 38th place with 29-6.
Byron Velvick, host of BassCenter on ESPN2 Saturdays at 11 a.m. ET. Velvick brought in 15-2 on Day 1 and weighed in another 14-3 on Friday for a two-day total of 29-5 and 40th place. Velvick, an avid poker player who lives just outside of gambling capital Las Vegas, said unlike his risky work with a swimbait on Lake Amistad last week, he relied on sight-fishing this tournament, his go-to technique. "I worked off of my sight-fishing strengths this time and I wasn't a gambler."
Former Bassmaster Classic champion and seventh-place Elite angler Takahiro Omori took the Bag of the Day with 20-6, earning him a $1,000 bonus. If it remains one of the 10 heaviest in Elite Series season, he will qualify for the BUSCH Shootout later in the year.
Greg Gutierrez of Red Bluff, Calif., had the Purolator Big Bass, a 7-7 largemouth that earned him a bonus of $1,000.
Also, co-angler Rick Hill of Texas was leading the charge with 18-13 in his division. He was followed by Chad Kallina of Texas with 18-8; Russell Lohman of Louisiana in third with 18-5; Thomas Ferro in fourth with 17-15; and Howard Stephens of South Carolina in fifth with 16-14.
