MANNING, S.C. - March 23, 2003 - Texan Zell Rowland ended his four-year winless streak on the Bassmaster Tour claiming victory in the bass fishing event taking place on Santee Cooper lakes with a four-day total of 98 pounds 9 ounces. His total was the second highest in Bassmaster Tour history.
Mark Davis, Ark., finished second with 86-7; Larry Nixon, Ark., third, 84-6; Edwin Evers, Okla., fourth, 81-14; Chad Morgenthaler, Ill., fifth, 79-10 and Kevin VanDam, Mich., sixth 78-9.
"I'm a wreck," said Rowland. "I found a little area during the second day of practice where I caught about 20 pounds. The interesting thing about the area is that I didn't see any locals or any other tournament anglers fishing that area. The first day of the tournament I caught my fish by 9:30 and the second day I had 30 pounds in that area by 9."
Rowland caught his bass utilizing a 3/8 ounce chartreuse Excalibur spinnerbait with twin double willow leaf blades a Doug Garrett Tube (black-blue-purple) and a Yum lizard (watermelonseed).
The weights for each of the six anglers competing rank in the all-time top 11 for Bassmaster Tour events: Davis, fourth; Nixon, sixth; Evers, seventh; Mogenthaler, eighth and VanDam 11th.
Elton Luce leads the Busch BASS Angler of the Year points race by 4 over second place Bud Pruitt. The Top 100 anglers in points will travel to Stockton, Calif. for the season's seventh event on the California Delta beginning April 3.
