KATY, TEXAS (May 22, 2023) - Jacob Wheeler secured his sixth Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour win Sunday, May 21, on Lake Guntersville in Alabama. Wheeler locked down the win and a $100,000 paycheck by catching a dominating total weight of 54 pounds, 15 ounces during the event's two final days, giving him a 9 pounds, 7 ounces margin of victory.
Wheeler started the event in sixth place with 20 pounds, 15 ounces on day one of the qualifying round and jumped to second place after a 22 pound, 8 ounce effort on day two. When weights zeroed to begin the knockout round, the domination began. Wheeler started by catching 29 pounds, 9 ounces on Saturday before slamming the door shut with 25 pounds, 6 ounces on the final day of the event.
“Throughout the event, I was able to stay cool, dry, and comfortable as I ran around and fished a ton of water every day,” said Wheeler. “We designed my Magellan Outdoors Pro Jacob Wheeler Series of apparel and accessories to allow me to do what I do best, and this event was a prime example of that.”
Wheeler was one step ahead of the competition, opting to focus a portion of each tournament day on searching for new bass moving to offshore ledges. He spent most of the first two days of competition fishing the areas he located in practice but noted the key to his victory was continuing to look for new groups of bass working their way on their summer jaunt.
“We are proud of Jacob for his success this week at Lake Guntersville,” said Eastin Jordan, Senior Vice President of Private Brands at Academy Sports + Outdoors. “He has been a phenomenal partner and ambassador for both Academy Sports + Outdoors and the Magellan Outdoors brand for a long time and his success on the water this week is the perfect opportunity to kick off the recent launch of the Magellan Outdoors Pro Jacob Wheeler Signature Series.”
Wheeler has been an Academy Sports + Outdoors partner since 2015.
