PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (Aug. 26, 2013) – Rick Miller of Eastman, Wis., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds, 5 ounces Saturday to win the Bass Fishing League Great Lakes Division tournament on the Mississippi River at Prairie Du Chien. For his victory, Miller earned $3,963.

“My experience on the river was a huge part of my victory,” said Miller. “I’ve been retired for three years now, and I fish Pool No. 9 every day. I locked there for this event and was running and gunning, hitting a bunch of different isolated spots for one or two fish off of each. I mainly concentrated on the weed-lines in the main-river channel and fished very slowly.”

Miller said that he caught around 10 keepers on the day, with six coming via a black-and-blue- or brown-colored Marv Miller Flippin’ Jig and four coming on a white Hutch Swimming Jig with a white 5-inch Luck “E” Strike grub.

“The key for me was finding the current – either with weeds or rocks,” Miller went on to say. “All of my fish came from 10 feet of water or less. My St. Croix rods were crucial as well. The bite was very subtle, and the sensitivity of those rods were a huge benefit to me.”
