MARBURY, Md. (June 13, 2022) – Boater Jeff Mellott of Warfordsburg, Pennsylvania, caught five bass Saturday weighing 20 pounds, 4 ounces, to win the MLF Bass Fishing League Tournament on the Potomac River. Mellott earned $3,842 for his victory.

“In practice it was pretty obvious that an outgoing tide was going to be key, and the tide lined up really good for the tournament for me,” Mellott said. “I started out flipping pads in Mattawoman Creek and got a couple of fish out of the pads. Once the tide was pretty much out, I transitioned over to some grass and finished up my limit.”

Mellot said he used a green-pumpkin-colored Zoom Brush Hog
, pegged with a 3/8-ounce weight to flip pads. He switched to a ¼-ounce weight when he targeted the grass. Mellot said he caught 12 bass during the course of the day, nine of which were keepers.

“I had a 20-pound bag by 9 o’clock, and I was pretty sure something special was going on,” Mellott said. “But you never know on the Potomac, and somebody can always bust one of those 24- or 25-pound bags. I’ve seen it happen. Nothing’s ever in the bag when it’s the Potomac.

“This is my first year fishing as a boater, and to get a win is pretty special,” Mellott added. “I’ve had a couple as a co-angler, but to get one as a boater is something special.
