ZWOLLE, La. (May 13, 2013) – Dicky Newberry of Houston, Texas, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 19 pounds even Saturday to win the Bass Fishing League Cowboy Division tournament on Toledo Bend Reservoir. For his victory, Newberry earned $6,632.

“I fished on the south end of the lake,” said Newberry. “I decided that I really wanted to concentrate on the grass and hydrilla near Housen Bay.”

Newberry fished the edges of the grass, keying on secondary points. He said that the majority of his fish came from a Strike King Lures chartreuse shad-colored 6XD crankbait, but he did catch a few throwing a swimbait.

“Once I started to concentrate on the secondary points I really keyed in on the pattern,” Newberry said. “Then, I started covering a lot of water in my Ranger boat that people hadn’t already fished. That was the difference maker for me.”

Newberry estimated that he caught 20 fish throughout the day, with 10 of them weighing more than three pounds.

“Most of my weight came before 9 a.m.,” Newberry said. “I was able to cull a few times, though. It was a fun day.”
