Bill Lowen of Brookville, Ind., took first place in a recent Walmart Bass Fishing League Hoosier Division super tournament on the Ohio River. The 10 bass which totaled 18 pounds, 9 ounces that he weighed in during the two-day event, held Sept. 8-9, 2012, resulted in a payday of over $4,800. “I did not have any intentions on fishing in the event,” he said. “I was fishing the river on Friday (day before the first tournament day) with my brother. The fish on the main part of the river were biting tremendously well. I called my wife and asked her to phone in my registration for the tournament.” The last-minute phone call was the main obstacle that stood between him and the victory – the second place angler in the event, Ray Brunner, came up 2 pounds, 12 ounces short of matching Lowen’s total. “That time of the year the fish are on the main river,” he said. “I caught every fish on a Tight Lines UV tube in green pumpkin. My co-angler could not get bit all day. By the end of the day, he switched to the green pumpkin UV tube and ended up qualifying for the regionals.” This is Lowen’s forth BFL win. Three of those wins, including this one, occurred on the Ohio River. He finished second at the last BFL event held at Tanners Creek in Lawrenceburg. “It felt good to get the win on my home waters,” he said.

However, come February 2013 Lowen will set his sights on competing in his fifth Bassmaster Classic scheduled to take place Feb. 22-24, 2013, on Grand Lake in Tulsa, Okla. Also, while he could not share any specifics, he did hint that Buck Knives, one of Lowen’s sponsors, is set to release new products in early 2013 that should be a huge hit for anglers.
