TRENTON, Mich. – Large limits of bass seemed to be the name of the game for many anglers during the second day of bass fishing competition at the FLW Tour on the Detroit River. Pro Bill McDonald of Greenwood, Ind., caught the heaviest sack of the day, a five-bass limit weighing 25 pounds, 2 ounces Friday to take the lead in a field of the best bass pros in the world. McDonald’s two-day catch of 10 bass weighing 46 pounds, 11 ounces gives him a 2-pound, 14-ounce lead heading into the third day of the tournament.

“I pulled up and on my first cast caught one that weighed 5-10,” said McDonald, who has 16 top-10 finishes in FLW competition. “And I just started catching them. I was done by 10:30. So I just stuck around the area and tried to halfway guard the area for the rest of the day.”

McDonald said he caught “10 or 12” keepers during the course of the day on a drop-shot rig in an area he fished on the first day of competition. He said he ran around searching for fish a bit more on Thursday, but fine-tuned his attack on Friday. He added that he has other areas in case he needs a backup plan, but plans to stick to the area that pushed him into the lead.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” McDonald said. “I’m not catching numbers, but the quality is phenomenal.”
