Sandra Day O’Connor HS Wins Arizona Fishing Championship On Lake Havasu

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (June 16, 2014) – The Sandra Day O’Connor High School team of Shane Edgar and Hunter Rackley brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 15 pounds, 1 ounce to win the 2014 Arizona State High School Fishing Championship on Lake Havasu. The win earned the team the title of state champions and advanced the team to the High School Fishing Western conference championship event, held Sunday, Oct. 12 on Clear Lake in Clear Lake, Calif. 

     The top five teams on Lake Havasu were:

       1st:            Sandra Day O’Connor High School – Shane Edgar and Hunter Rackley, five bass, 15-1

       2nd:            Boulder Creek High School – Julius Mazy and Justin Fields, five bass, 14-12

       3rd:             Lake Havasu High School/Highland High School – Wesley Smith and Morgan Nurenberg, five bass, 14-5

       4th:            Yuma High School – Brian Velasquez and Jaysen Brooks, five bass, 13-8

       5th:            Payson High School – Layne Chitwood and Zacharie Ulmer, four bass, 9-7

     The 2014 Arizona State High School Fishing Championship was a two-person (team) event for students in grades 9-12. The top 10 percent from each TBF/FLW state championship field will advance to a High School Fishing conference championship along with the top 3 teams from each of the six 2014 High School Fishing Opens that coincide with the 2014 Walmart FLW Tour. The top 10 percent of each conference championship field will then advance to the High School Fishing National Championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship and an FLW Tour stop in the spring of 2015. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.

     In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all SAF members nationwide automatically qualify for the world’s largest high school bass tournament, the 2014 High School Fishing World Finals, held on Lake Dardanelle in Russelville, Ark., on July 15-19.
