Biologists in West Central Arkansas recently sampled Horsehead Lake (Johnson County) and documented improvement in the lake’s Largemouth Bass population. Size structure has improved, as a larger percentage of the population is over both 12 and 15 inches than in previous years. Maybe that’s because the bass have taken to eating shad (like the ones in the picture)? Biologists also noticed some impressive crappie during their sampling effort.
Now that spring has sprung, it’s time to get the rods and reels out and hit the water. Give Horsehead Lake a try! If you do, consider harvesting bass in the 10 – 13 inch range. They make great table fare and harvesting them will help to control overly abundant population numbers, which will lead to better growth and population size structure of those that remain.
