OAKLEY --- The bass fishing records fell fast at the weekend WON BASS Delta Invitational with Steve Sapp of Manteca winning his third straight Delta event and the fifth in the past six years on the WON BASS circuit. He established a new Pro one-day weight record with 34.22 pounds on Saturday and a total two-day record of 60.85 pounds for 10 bass. Also falling was the AAA total record catch of 56.47 pounds by Bonny Cormany of Riverside, who also set the AAA one-day record as she fished with Sapp for that 34.22-pound catch. She also set the AAA record for winnings with a total of $5,900 in cash. On the second round, she fished with John Prevost of Oakley and they bagged 22.25 pounds.

A sixth record to fall was the AAA mark for the largest bass on the tour, a 14.08 pounder caught by Dave Newton of Brentwood.

The field of 167 boats and 334 anglers saw some spectacular fishing despite heavy rains all day Saturday and most of Sunday. Big fish were on the move all over the Delta, however, as the tournament saw 14 fish over 9 pounds caught and uncountable numbers of 5 to 8 pounders.

Sapp won a total of $41,050 including a $36,000 boat package consisting of a Ranger 519, Mercury 175, Lowrance Electronics, Trojan Batteries and MotorGuide trolling motor. He reported that he caught all of his fish on black-and-red jigs and Speed Worms.

Second place was taken --- for the second year in a row --- by Jerry Ballesteros of Burbank, who weighed a spectacular 49.31 pounds but was still 11.54 pounds behind that of Sapp. Jerry went home with $8,760.

Third place went to Wayne Breazeale of Kelseyville with a total of 43.32 pounds and $6,840 in winnings. Wayne also maintained his large lead in the Ranger Cup race and in the north total points in the Daiwa Cup race. On the first day, the fishing was so good the anglers weighed in 733 bass with an average weight of 3.08 pounds. That average slipped to only 2.75 on the second day.

Newton picked up $1,500 in the Miller High Daily Double for his big fish of Sunday while R.J. Bennett of Grass Valley was second for $500 with a 12.21 pounder. Greg Hobrock of Vancouver, WA, was third at 12.01 pounds.

Some of the other big fish weighed in on Sunday included: 10.50 by Rick Kendrick, 9.50 by Jerry Ballesteros, 9.14 by Bill Durbin, 8.78 by Lynn Miller, 8.52 by Stephen Penrod and 8.10 by Jerry Woodward.

The big fish pounds on Saturday included a 10.98 pounder that won $1,500 for Danny Miller of Orangevale and a 10.09 pounder that got $500 for Steve Hayashi of Tracy. Other lunkers included: 9.98 by Jack Van Grouw, 9.87 by Tim Turner, 9.77 by Lee Poel, 9.61 by Wayne Breazeale, 9.26 by Jim Tatum and 9.05 by Steve Sapp.

Cormany also won big in the standings with her AAA lead being a whopping 10.88-pound margin over second place angler Jay Riggs of Rosamond, who took home $4,170 for 45.59 pounds. Third place and $1,000 went to Dale Taft of Lancaster with 43.92 pounds.
