The Best Bass Fishing Lakes in Colorado

While bass are not the most popular freshwater gamefish in Colorado, the state still ranks as one of the top states when it comes to spotted, largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing opportunities. While many bodies of water in Colorado produce their share of big bass every now and then, the ones listed below are known for consistently kicking out numbers of sizeable bass, which is why they're listed as the best bass lakes in Colorado.

  1. Pueblo Reservoir is known for giant smallmouth bass, but also contains big largemouth and spotted bass.  The 15" limit allows it to support a very healthy bass population in the 2-6 pound range.  These fish are more aggressive, and 100 fish days are not uncommon.
  2. Horsetooth Reservoir contains an ample population of smallmouth and largemouth bass eager to smack your lure.  Smallmouth over 5 pounds have been caught in recent years, and the nonstop action from 2-4 pound largemouth bass hiding in the weedy shallows is enough to draw serious bass anglers to this bass factory.
  3. McPhee Reservoir continues to produce healthy numbers of giant smallmouth bass.  It's steep rocky shorelines and offshore structure offers prime habitat for growing trophy smallmouth bass. McPhee is regarded as one of the best bass fisheries in Colorado, hosting many bass tournaments each year.
