Okuma Psycho Stick

I acquired two Okuma Psycho Stick rods a few months ago and have been VERY impressed. Previously my exposure to the Okuma brand started with the Helios line. The new Okuma continues the innovation we have come to expect from this premier company.

I own the 7’ 2” medium PSY-S-721M spinning rod and the 7’ 5” medium-heavy PSY-C-751MH casting rod.  These rods compare in many ways to the St. Croix Legend Elite, which I have fished for over a decade (Avids before then).  High-quality components, sensitive blanks, and tight quality control are among the most notable features of these high-end rods.

PSY-C-751MH Casting

I fish the casting rod as a dedicated jig rod, but it could be used for various techniques. Spinnerbaits, medium-weight swimbaits, and frogs come to mind.  The length and flexibility make for long casts and superior handling. More broadly, you might consider this your all-around go-to casting rig.

The technical improvements over the Helios are subtle but noticeable. The Psycho Stick is light in weight but as strong or stronger than you might expect in a medium-heavy rod.  When you hook up with heavier bass, you are in complete control.  Again, I would compare the performance and control to that of the Legend Elite or G. Loomis MBR 844C, one of my all-time favorite rods.

Finally, the pricing point seems low to me and a desirable alternative to other options.

PSY-S-721M Spinning

The comparison here is with my main spinning rod, G.Loomis GLX PR844S. The Okuma rod is lighter, stronger, and has comparable components at about half the price!  The extra length and a more flexible blank increase casting distance.  This rod is designed for "bigger" fish if that is your target.

I fish everything from live minnows to light swimbaits on this rig. The Psycho Stick performs flawlessly. I am VERY impressed.
