Glenn: Hey folks, Glenn May here with BassResource.com, and welcome to another edition of Hank Parker's Fishing Tips. Hank, this is a great question, it comes from Chris from Charleston, Indiana. And he wants to know, "How do I get my girlfriend interested in fishing?"

Hank: Well there's several ways to do that. One, is hide chocolates in your boat. Two, is always have a surprise gift in your tackle box for her. And three, now let me get serious.

Let me tell you what we all tend to do. We tend to do this as dads, and we tend to do this as granddads, we tend to do this as boyfriends, and we tend to do this as husbands, we expect our wives, our children, or our grandchildren to enjoy fishing on the same level that we do. That's not usually the way it is. I get fired up and I get in the back of a pocket and I think I can catch a bass. But Martha, my wife, she's way more interested, "God, that is a beautiful shoreline right there. Look at those beautiful... What kinda bird is that?"

Share, be a part of that, and make it easy. Alan Jackson wrote a song, and one of the lines in the song says, "Somehow I learned how to listen." I have five children. My older boys, I didn't know how to listen. It was all about dad, about the way I wanted to fish. And my younger son came along, and I realized it was about Timmy, not about Hank. And so I took my time and made it fun for him. If he wanted to stop, get in the cooler, and eat cheese crackers, we stopped. We didn't fish like I was in the Bassmaster Classic.

So maybe if you would take your girlfriend, find a restaurant, go to a lake that has a nice restaurant, spend a little time, ride around look at the houses, have conversation, and do a little fishing and gradually increase that. You could be effective. But to go out and fish like I like to fish and you like to fish, for a lady that has not been acclimated to that is a little bit too demanding. So lighten up, make it fun. And that is gonna be the key to get her to go back repeatedly on those fishing trips.

Glenn: That's sage advice from a guy who's got a huge family of fishing fanatics, and you've obviously got the system down. Thanks for asking that question, Chris, and I certainly hope it helps out.
