Here's a little-known tip that will help keep your motor running trouble free for a long time!

Hi, David Meeler with Yamaha Marine here to share another maintenance tip with you. Whether you use one of the VMAX SHOs, the four stroke power, or you use a two stroke, it doesn't matter. Fresh water, salt water, any time you get back, it's a good idea to flush your engine out. Even in fresh water, you've got impurities, and those are going to be pulled into the block and remain there until you use the engine again next time.

On Yamaha outboard engines, you'll find the built in flush attachment to be on the side of the engine. Simply loosen that, hook it to a garden hose, turn the garden hose on full blast, and allow that water to clean out the inside of your engine. When you're done, turn the water off and reconnect it. It's not necessary to run the engine while you have the hose hooked up. In fact, it's a good thing that you don't. Just allow the water pressure in the garden hose to do the work.
