The Abu Garcia Revo SX

Revos are Abu Garcia’s most popular model of baitcasting reel with bass anglers. The longtime fishing tackle manufacturer is solidifying that lofty position with the new Revo SX Gen 4, which is quickly becoming my favorite. It has plenty to like. It’s lightweight — only 7.7 ounces — easy to use, and fits comfortably in your hand.

The Revo SX Gen 4 that I tested has a 7.3:1 gear ratio, which an HS identifies following the model number. While it can be used for various fishing techniques, it shines while burning topwater lures or flipping and pitching when you want to retrieve your bait quickly so you can make more presentations. But if you need a reel to grind big spinnerbaits or crankbaits, Abu does offer it with a slightly more powerful 6.6:1 gear ratio.

Nine stainless steel ball bearings and one roller bearing ensure the Revo SX Gen 4 operates smoothly. They support its D2 Gear Design and long-lasting brass main gear. And its Power Stack Carbon Matrix Drag System has plenty of stopping power.

The Revo SX Gen 4 is available in the right and left retrieves and will hold about 145 yards of 12-pound test monofilament or braided line of equal diameter. That’s usually about 30-pound test.

The Revo SX Gen 4 performed as advertised when I fished with it. It’s a great option if you need a casting reel that’s versatile, reliable, and a true performer.
